CARRY THE WEIGHT. EARN THE VIEW.

This Memorial Day weekend, take on the Mt. Soledad Hill Climb presented by Kaiser Permanente — a 1.8 mile ascent rooted in honor, effort, and remembrance.

Join us on May 23, 2026 and carry the weight, literally or symbolically, as you make your way to the summit.

Whether you choose the Ruck Challenge with a 40 lb (Men) or 30 lb (Women) pack, or take on the hill climb at your own pace walking, hiking, or adding your own weight, every step is part of something bigger.

At the top, stand before the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial — a place built to honor those who gave everything.

Every step is part of the tribute.

Remember Why It Matters.

Choose Your Challenge

Ruck Challenge

Take on a 1.8 mile (3km) uphill climb with a 40 lb (Men) / 30 lb (Women) weighted pack—a true test of strength, endurance, and purpose.

Participants should bring their own rucksack or backpack. Weight will be provided on-site, with scales available to ensure proper load.

This division is designed to reflect the weight carried by those who serve, transforming the climb into a deeper, more meaningful experience.

Participants in the Ruck Challenge will receive a commemorative finisher coin and are eligible for ruck division awards.

Hill Climb

Climb Mt. Soledad at your own pace — walk, hike, or challenge yourself in a way that feels right for you.

This 1.8 mile (3km) uphill route is open to all fitness levels and offers a meaningful way to participate in Memorial Day weekend.

Participants are welcome to go unweighted or bring their own weighted vest or pack for an added personal challenge.

Whether you’re coming for the physical effort or to show support, every step to the summit is part of the tribute.

Course Highlight

This 1.8-mile (3km) route is a continuous uphill ascent from start to finish, winding through La Jolla neighborhoods as you steadily gain elevation with every step.

You’ll pass a mid-course water station before continuing into the final stretch, where the effort peaks and the views begin to open up.

It’s a course designed to challenge you, and reward you at the top.

Parking & Shuttle Information

Participants should park near Mt. Soledad Memorial Park prior to check-in. Approximately 30 parking spaces will be available in the lower Mt. Soledad parking lot on a first come, first served basis. Once the lower lot fills, additional street parking will be available along La Jolla Scenic Drive before reaching the memorial entrance. Participants parking there should expect approximately a ¼-mile walk to the check-in and shuttle loading area.

We encourage participants to arrive early to allow enough time for parking, check-in, and shuttle transportation to the start line.

Shuttles will transport participants to the start line prior to their selected wave time. Please plan to arrive early to allow time for parking, check-in, and shuttle transportation.

To help manage shuttle flow, participants will be assigned approximate shuttle groups in a separate email prior to event day. Shuttle departure groups are as follows:

Group 1         7:20 AM

Group 2        7:40 AM
